Takeaways:
- After launching in April 2015, Apple has quickly dominated smartwatch market share.
- Apple shipped 4 million smartwatches in 2Q 2015, capturing 75.5 percent of the global market.
- The next-closest competitor, Samsung, went from a 73.6 percent market share in 2Q 2014 to a 7.5 percent share in 2Q 2015.
It shouldn’t be a shock to anyone who remembers the iPhone launch that Apple is dominating global smartwatch market share already. After launching in April 2015, Apple quickly swallowed Samsung’s share — Samsung went from owning most of the smartwatch market (73.6 percent) in 2Q 2014 to a measly 7.5 percent market share in 2Q 2015.
That doesn’t mean Samsung is shipping fewer watches. The number of watches that Samsung shipped almost doubled year over year from 2014 to 2015, from 400,000 to 700,000.
[Tweet “Apple shipped 5X as many watches as Samsung in 2Q ’15.”]
But despite that impressive growth, Apple clearly has the watch to beat; it shipped 4 million watches in 2Q 2015, more than five times as many as Samsung.
