Re/Max CEO Adam Contos sat down with RealScout founder and CEO Andrew Flachner — an editorial partner of Inman — for an exclusive interview at the Re/Max headquarters in Denver, Colorado, yesterday.
The wide-ranging 40-minute conversation in the video above, touched on a number of topics, including Contos’s background in the military and law enforcement, rising through the ranks at Re/Max and some of the challenges associated with that climb.
The two did not discuss an internal investigation that found that Contos and former CEO and founder David Liniger violated company ethics code. Contos did briefly discuss his relationship with Liniger and their disagreement over the company’s rebrand.
“He was not all that enthusiastic about the whole thing,” Contos recalled, before explaining that he ultimately convinced Liniger the change was best for the brand.
The conversation featured a number of questions from Re/Max agents about competition in the real estate marketplace, specifically from discount brokerages, independent brokerages and iBuyers.
Contos said he wouldn’t rule out some serving different customers in a variety of markets under different brands all within the Re/Max company.
“Would we consider that?” he said. “We might, I’m not going to write anything off.”
The two also discussed Re/Max’s investment in the technology sector, specifically the acquisition of real estate technology company booj. Contos said that beginning in May 2019, Re/Max will start pushing out some product it’s developing with booj, which creates branded websites, mobile apps and can be a lead generation tool.
He called it, “not just a software package but a platform.”
