Our coaching organization is growing rapidly — which means that a lot of our time lately has gone to interviewing potential coaches. We’ve had a ton of qualified applications, and even more questions about what being a coach is all about from agents interested in this discipline. Most agents aren’t well-versed in what coaching is, so they tend to assume that it comes out of being a great real estate salesperson — but that’s not entirely true.

Being a truly great coach is a lot of work, and requires a caring commitment to service that goes above and beyond what most agents are used to. 10 key qualities of a great coach:

1. Proven experience

A great coach is someone who has a proven track record in the field in which you wish to excel. They are not a generalist; they are a specialist. They’ve done or are currently doing what they’re coaching you to do. They’re not a life coach, they are
a real estate coach.

2. A natural-born teacher

A great coach isn’t just a great technician; they also are a great communicator of the education required to move you forward.

3. A natural-born learner

A great coach has been trained to be a great coach; they didn’t just roll out of bed and decide to be a coach. Coaching isn’t regulated.

4. Not complacent

A great coach is continually upgrading their education, techniques and strategies so they gain maximum versatility. A great coach can get results for a variety of personality styles in a variety of different markets, in a variety of situations. They aren’t limited to a certain ideology. Instead, they pull from a multitude of techniques to create what’s right for each client.

5. Service-oriented

A great coach and truly cares about the success of their clients and will go the extra mile to make sure the client meets or exceeds their goals.

6. Consciously competent

The difference between a coach and a trainer or presenter is that a great coach actually coaches you how to execute the tasks required to reach your goal. They don’t just tell you to do it or present ideas, they show you how to achieve what’s necessary. They ask questions that lead you to self-discover the solutions.

7. Caring accountability

A great coach keeps you on track, in a systematic, logical and attainable way. They sort out what is necessary for you excel and coach you to what is most efficient and effective. They help you see what’s unnecessary and what’s necessary so you can get to the finish line faster with less stress.

8. Your greatest fan

A great coach celebrates your victories and gets you through the challenges with equal enthusiasm. They believe in you, sometimes even more than you believe in yourself. They are your fan, your co-pilot, your teacher and your mentor.

9. Considerate and appropriate confrontation

A great coach gets you out of your way, in a constructive, supportive and effective manor. They instigate and support breakthroughs.

10. Accountability to the stated goals

A great coach doesn’t just tell you what to do; they get you to do it. Successful implementation results from the collaboration between a coachable client and a great coach.
