To give you an idea of some potential encounters, here are five people you’ll likely run into at this summer’s premiere real estate tech event:

1. The go-getter

Agents are known for being outgoing, but the go-getter is on a nonstop hunt for information and networking opportunities.

The go-getter might be a speaker or a silent observer, and usually is open to new instruction no matter how successful they’ve been in their current ways. The go-getter takes time to research local and national market trends, new and upcoming brokerages, and online advertising developments.

2. The adapter

The adapter is the type who’s willing to embrace change. New tech trends don’t scare the adapter; they excite, instead. He or she has a positive outlook on developments, mergers and the future of real estate. The adapter is likely enticed by forward-thinking conversations over discussing controversies of the past.

3. The techie

The techie can be seen juggling his or her tablet, laptop, smartphone and wearable — possibly on one arm. He or she could be a developer for a real estate technology company and maybe not in a client-facing role.

The techie is very serious about how real estate technology is bettering the industry and probably isn’t afraid to explain why their favorite platform ranks on top.

4. The sponge

The sponge is ready to learn and can often be spotted vigorously taking notes. Perhaps he or she has a permanent ink stain on his or her hand, or a number of cords hanging out of a briefcase to ensure note-taking tech is constantly charged.

The sponge is, obviously, open to learning, and tries to attend as many events as possible during the short conference period. He or she might be a newbie or a managing broker who wants insight from agents similar to those he represents.

5. The marketer

The marketer uses conferences primarily as networking platforms. This individual does not hesitate to whip out business cards, especially when they spot a real estate mogul in their vicinity. The marketer can be seen snapping multiple pictures, asking everyone for their Twitter handle in between flashes. He or she is not afraid to add you to their contacts, no matter the distance between your home turfs.

Regardless of who you meet at Inman Connect this year, there are some best practices to make yourself stand out in a sea of thriving, dedicated agents. Check out these speaking tips recommended by Brad Inman via the Inman Coast to Coast Facebook group:

1. Be vulnerable, let go a little. Don’t take yourself so seriously and people will like you more — we promise.

2. Make one or two strong points. Do not present too much information.

3. Don’t qualify everything, just say it. You will be fine.

4. No one will notice your mistakes. No one.

5. Don’t play it safe; be bold, fearless. That is what Connect is about, and as a result, people will remember you.

6. Prepare and practice, prepare and practice, prepare and practice.

7. Spend ample time with your moderator beforehand. Know what to expect.

8. Smile and enjoy yourself. This is an opportunity, not torture.
