Known for its ties to the ’80s cult classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the village of Northbrook is considered a top suburb in the Midwest.

The North Shore village of roughly 33,000 was recently ranked as the top city in Illinois to live by Movoto Real Estate and the seventh best Illinois suburb by Niche.

One reason for these rankings is the quality of the village’s schools. The Glenbrook High School District 225 recently ranked as the second best district in the state. The district boasts a student-to-teacher ratio of 13:1. Glenbrook North High School was featured in a number of Ferris Bueller scenes and was previously attended by the film’s director John Hughes.

GreatSchools gave the high school a “10” rating. The site also doled out 10 ratings to three area elementary schools and two middle schools.

Via the Northbrook Park District the village offers these kids a number of recreational options. The park district was founded in 1927 and currently maintains more than 500 acres of land spread between 22 park areas. Facilities available to residents include a velodrome for track cycling, an aquatic center, golf course, theatre, skate park and dog park. The village is also home to the Chicago Curling Club.

Northbrook real estate market

Being a top Illinois suburb it’s no surprise that Northbrook is also considered a luxury housing market.

Of the 446 homes for sale in mid-April the median listing price was $549,000, according to Realtor.com.

Depending on source the median home price in the village is anywhere from $400,000 to $480,000. Northbrook appears to be a cheaper alternative to the North Shore cities of Glencoe and Northfield, with home prices comparable to Highland Park, Glenview and Deerfield.

Northbrook residents have an average commute time of nearly 29 minutes, with downtown Chicago being roughly 25 miles away. A number of highways and interstates are easily accessible from the village. Those wishing to avoid driving can utilize two Metra stations that lie within the village.
