- Don't overcomplicate your speech just to fill the space.
- Be brief and clear.
- They will forget what you said but remember how you made them feel. Act with compassion -- it doesn't take away from you, it adds to who you are.
Do a quick scan of your professional and social circles. Place yourself in various scenarios. In each one, are people gravitating toward or away from you during your conversations? Do you feel uncomfortable building rapport with strangers?
If so, you might be conversationally incompetent.
Your ability to speak clearly with others face-to-face is the most valuable skill you can cultivate. Monitor your thinking and don’t let your ego dominate the conversation. Genuinely pay attention. Listen. And don’t fake it if you want to make it.
