• Toxic people are everywhere this time of year. Also known as dream-killers, these people are not just clients, but are also found in family, friends -- and even online! They will stop your momentum going into next year if you let them.
  • If you continue to allow sellers and buyers who are unmotivated and don't meet your prequalification standards in your business, you are going to burn out real fast!
  • Gossip is toxic. If you're at the center of receiving gossip or sharing it, you are the toxic person. Go on a gossip fast so you don't jeopardize your mindset.

It’s that time of year again. In addition to a contentious election season, many parts of the country are heading into the crabby, cold days of winter, and it seems like everywhere you turn, someone wants to bah-humbug on your business.

It’s times like these that can make even the best agents wonder about hanging up their lockbox key until next year, but that would be a big mistake.

On today’s podcast, we give you the first of 10 strategies to kick the dream-killers to the curb.

1. Prune the weeds before they grow

Have systems in place to identify early warning signs before the weeds take over your relationship. In real estate, this means prequalifying 100 percent of your buyers and sellers for motivation, timeframe and level of cooperation.

2. Make sure you are not the toxic person yourself

Monitor your compliant-o-meter. Are you a battery charger or a battery drainer? What would people around you say? Do you create problems just to feel like you’ve negotiated?

3. Stop having separate rules for different or unique situations

Just because someone is buying or selling at twice your average sale price doesn’t automatically make them qualified.

4. Generate an abundance of business, and you don’t have to tolerate

How many times have you worked with toxic people because you just didn’t have enough in your pipeline and figured “what the heck”? The more business you have, the less frequently you’ll say “yes” to questionable prospects.

5. Stop thinking real estate is full of toxic people or that just your business has toxic types

It’s not just real estate. It’s dealing with the public.

6. Appreciate difficult people for the light they shine on your business

Cranky, particular, stressed-out types are like heat-seeking missiles looking for the flaws in your system. Be grateful they identify those issues for you, then fix the flaws.

7. Focus on what’s going right more than what’s going wrong

Gratitude, grace and giving will prevail when you focus on what you’re here to give more than what’s here to take.

Listen to today’s show to hear how to repel the toxic people in your life. Join us tomorrow for the remaining points and a little known secret to applying these strategies to your business.
