Think about the worst dysfunctional work scenario you’ve ever experienced. With all due respect: Rye Barcott has seen much, much worse.
He’s worked in the Marine Corps, serving overseas in Iraq and other places that are awash in major conflict. He’s spent time in the Kibera slum in Nairobi as a midshipman in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), where he created a program to help eliminate ethnic violence. And he’s currently working to help unite our fractured and hyper-polarized political system by helping veterans from any party who are running for office and who pledge to work to cross-partisan benefit if elected.
Barcott will be sharing what he’s learned about leadership and uniting people and groups who are used to being in conflict at a general session at Inman Connect San Francisco. The conference runs July 17 through 20 and features speakers and sessions that will elevate your real estate business, plus plenty of networking and opportunities for fun.
Barcott explained that he leans heavily on anthropology and its practices to help him facilitate discussion among very different groups. “Anthropologists focus on deep immersion into another culture. The military has a line that strikes at this: ‘You’ve got to get your boots on the ground.’ You have to be present and experience or develop a sense of empathy, meaning understanding the other individual’s perspective.”
If you can do that — try to understand their pain points and the threats that are concerning them today — then combine what you’ve learned with your own perspective and focus on finding common ground, you’ll discover a way to create shared value. And that will help cross tribal lines and find solutions that everyone likes and supports.
“You have to find different channels, and frankly, different ways of listening to each other and having real communication,” Barcott said. “It’s part of the reason why conferences are so valuable — because that communication will usually only materialize if there’s trust.”
Join the real estate conference for agents, brokers, technologists and more, and hear Barcott share his expertise firsthand.
