A new smart padlock in development surpassed its crowdfunding goal on Indegogo in a couple of hours. As of this writing, igloohome’s Smart Padlock is at $130,000-plus of its $50,000 funding goal with 17 days left.

The lock uses number-based code generation and sharing to provide remote access. Codes can be shared via text, email and even Facebook messenger.

The lock’s owner uses the igloohome app to create an array of access settings for potential users, who don’t need an additional app to open the lock.

Friends or vendors who need consistent or recurring access to a property can be assigned permanent codes, and short-term users can be given a time-based access code. If a code wasn’t sent, users can scan a UR-code printed on the lock to request access. (That means they would need a code scanning tool.)

The codes are generated by an algorithm that leverages security technology similar to what banks and RSA-code software offers, according to the company’s launch video.

An additional security feature involves pin-code masking, meaning it allows for a series of random numbers to be entered before the actual pin in case someone is watching.

Activity is tracked via the app so users can better manage who’s been in and when. It can also send Bluetooth codes if requested and reminds people to relock it a few minutes after opening.

The padlock itself isn’t designed to hold physical keys, so real estate agents wanting a smart update on the traditional lockbox might want to look at Toor.

However, for those homes with gate access, separate garages or outside living quarters that need to be seen, the igloohome Smart Padlock could be of value.

Smart locks and web-based home access technologies in multiple iterations have been hitting the market in the past couple of years as more homeowners adapt to what’s called the “sharing economy,” which now involves everything from pet walking to borrowing cars.

Real estate agents, who have to show listings and tour buyers, should be aware of the trends, especially if showing homes that leverage Airbnb or similar remote-access services.

Igloohome has multiple awards for its previous lock products, including the Consumer Electronics Show Asia Innovation Award in 2017 and 2018 and an iF Design Award. Its products are available in more than 90 countries.

The company is based in Singapore with offices in San Diego, London and China.

Early backing promotions include one lock for $69 and five for $335.
