MSN Money explores whether open houses are worth the trouble to sellers, noting that some critics consider them more about helping real estate agents land clients than marketing a property.

Open houses “also present an opening for thieves who pretend to be homebuyers but in fact are there to steal the owner’s belongings” or case a home for a burglary, MSN Money warns.

Most agents and brokers polled by Inman News last year said the primary purpose of a “National Open House Weekend” staged by Realtor associations each spring is to promote  Realtors and real estate professionals (62.6 percent). Only about 1 in 5 said the event was intended to connect buyers and sellers. But 60 percent said open houses are currently part of their strategy for marketing listings. Source: money.msn.com.
