Savage, Maryland, is centrally located between two big cities, giving locals easy access to work and culture while staying in a quaint residential environment. Although only 18 miles south of Baltimore and 21 miles north of Washington D.C., the historic Howard County town maintains an enchanting atmosphere that feels more pastoral than urban.

Local roots are deeply ingrained into the textile and cotton industry, embodied by the historic Savage Mill, which dates back to the 1820s. The mill functioned until 1947, and renovations began in 1984 to preserve the celebrated landmark.

Education and community

The Little Patuxent River runs straight through Savage at the southern tip of Howard County. Howard County is regularly recognized as a scenic, safe and diverse place to settle down.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Savage includes over 7,000 people. Savage’s homeownership rate is almost 60 percent, and over 45 percent of the population holds a bachelor’s degree or higher. The median income between 2010 and 2014 was $82,242.

Across the county, locals have access to six regional parks, 24 community parks, five lakes and seven golf courses. For outdoor activity enthusiasts, Howard County holds 200 miles of walking, biking and hiking trails.

The town has one private elementary school, Bethel Christian Academy. GreatSchools reviews give the institution four out of five stars, with many parents praising the dedicated staff, challenging curriculum and strong values.

The cost of buying in Savage

Buying a home in Savage isn’t out of reach for many first-time and trade-up homebuyers. The median single-family home price was $277,535 as of August 19, according to Altos Research. Altos data shows average time on the market is about 200 days in Savage, with a mere six properties on the market currently.
