Cameron Paine, who served as founding CEO of Connecticut Multiple Listing Service, has taken the reins as senior vice president of industry relations at eXp Realty, the company announced on Wednesday.

Cameron Paine, who served as founding CEO of Connecticut Multiple Listing Service, has taken the reins as senior vice president of industry relations at eXp Realty, the fast-growing brokerage centered around a 3D virtual world and office, the company announced this week.

As a founding CEO of the Connecticut MLS since 2006, Paine oversaw a merger between his group and the Greater Fairfield County CMLS to form SmartMLS, now one of the 20 largest in the country.

“It is a privilege to be a part of an organization so willing to embrace change,” Paine told Inman in an email. “eXp has a clear vision of what success looks like and they pursue it with incredible energy and skill.”

Over 15 years, Paine has served on the Board of Directors of the Council of MLSs, sat on advisory councils for Realtor.com and Trulia, developed multiple proprietary data sets and written white papers on potential collaborations in the industry. In 2014, he came up with the idea to create the Broker Public Portal, a national public-facing MLS website. That site became a reality when Homesnap became the face of the BPP in 2017.

In his new role, Paine will represent eXp Realty among real estate professionals and look for ways for the brokerage to collaborate with MLSs, Realtor associations, brokerages, and technology partners.

“I’ve known Cameron for nearly 10 years and have watched with excitement the fantastic work he’s done to bring industry influencers together,” said Scott Petronis, eXp Realty’s chief product and technology officer. “Cameron’s experience will advance eXp Realty’s goal of creating strong relationships among the entire real estate ecosystem.”

Paine arrives with a breadth of specialized MLS knowledge. In 2008, Inman named him as one of the “Top 100 Most Influential People in Real Estate.” Paine has also contributed numerous Inman opinion columns on topics  that included iBuyers and MLS standards.

“One of the new areas that I will be looking to explore is finding collaborative opportunities with other brokerages, our MLS and Association partners, and technology vendors,” Paine said. “While we are fiercely competitive with one another, there are some common areas of interest; it is clear that collaboration and the resulting improvements in scale offer opportunities and advantages that are simply not possible when everyone tries to go it alone.”

In his spare time, Paine also enjoys historical literature, Japanese paper carving and classical music. He won a Grammy Award for his work on the music album ‘Colors of Love.’

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to clarify that Paine came up with the idea of the Broker Public Portal.
