Two of the 10 best suburbs in America are within 30 miles of San Francisco.

These cities are Atherton and Piedmont, according to a recent ranking from Business Insider.

Atherton ranked as the fifth best suburb primarily because of its schools and high median household income, $239,886.

The Oakland suburb of Piedmont holds the no. 6 spot. Overlooking the East Bay, the city has a high median household income of $207,222 and a highly educated population. According to Business Insider, more than 82 percent of Piedmont’s residents hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. The suburb also received a score of 10 from GreatSchools.

Located east of Piedmont, Orinda also made Business Insider’s top 50 suburbs list coming in at 22. Similar to Piedmont, the suburb received a GreatSchools score of 10. The city was also noted for its low poverty rate and 111 acres of land with access to hiking.

Considered one of the wealthiest towns in America, Hillsborough was ranked as the 37th best suburb nationally. The small San Mateo County city is a locale where “crime is virtually nonexistent” and the median household income sits at $236,528. The city was also noted for its award-winning public schools and public works services.

Three Silicon Valley suburbs, Los Altos (18), Los Altos Hills (34) and Palo Alto (46), along with the far out San Jose suburb of Saratoga (42). also made the list.

To determine the top suburbs nationally, Business Insider examined 2,754 municipalities within 25 miles of a major metro. Ranking factors included average commute times, median household income, poverty and crime rates, public school ratings and housing affordability.
