Houston-based AmCap Mortgage Ltd.’s primary focus is residential mortgage lending; however the firm has also made giving back to the community a top priority.

The firm, which has seven Houston offices and employs roughly 240 people locally, recently partnered with IMG Financial Group to host a golf tournament to benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation. Together the firms raised $26,200. These funds will be used to provide scholarships and financial assistance to the children and spouses of military men and women that were killed or disabled while serving.

AmCap’s Houston-based Hope Tree division is working to build a park for Clifton Middle School. Construction of the park began in November, with completion slated for November of next year.

Another local office, AmCap’s Premier division recently raised more than $12,000, via a bowling event, for Pearland agents that may need help during a time of crisis.

This summer one AmCap employee, Kate Smargiasso, aided in transporting 12 dogs from overcrowded Houston shelters to a no-kill Humane Society in Michigan. AmCap’s offices also partner with Habitat for Humanity.

Aside from its community involvement, AmCap has been named a top workplace by the Houston Chronicle for the past five years.

Giving back to the community is also a focus for one Houston broker. Ronnie Matthews, broker-owner of RE/MAX Legends, recently received the John E. Wolf Community Services Award from Houston Association of Realtors. The award honors a member that has made an outstanding contribution to the community, primarily outside the scope of the real estate industry.

In early 2015, Matthews and his wife established the Ronnie & Cathy Matthews Great American Charitable Foundation. The couple funded the foundation with an initial contribution of $1 million. Three of the charities the foundation supports are Lola’s Lucky Day, Inc., Montgomery County Women’s Shelter and Happy Hill Farm Academy.
