The orangey “Living Coral” is said to be “life-affirming” and a reaction to the onslaught of technology and social media in daily life.

For the 20th anniversary of its annual Color of the Year announcement, Pantone went with a bold choice.

The color authority chose 16-1546 Living Coral, a bright orange-y shade that mimics nautical coral itself, as its Color of The Year 2019.

Pantone, which describes the hue as “sociable” in the announcement, says Living Coral is a “reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy.”

For interior design, Pantone says that “When used as a bold statement in settings and décor, Living Coral fosters immersive experiences such as pop-up installations and interactive spaces, tied to a playful spirit.”

“Color is an equalizing lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities and this is particularly true for Living Coral,” Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, said in a release. “With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanizing and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive chord.”

Last year, the company went with Ultra Violet for its Color of the Year choice, an arguably safer choice for interior design and homeware it was meant to inspire.

This time around, decorators should have fun incorporating this “animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge” into their work.
